Tono & Lims Baby Colour Monte Bianco — 4ml Fountain Pen Ink Sample

Hue: A warm chestnut brown with a distinct red-orange cast — terracotta at writing weight, deepening to a cocoa brown where it pools. Worth flagging: the official listings place this in the Baby Color pastel range and give a swatch value around RGB 208/159/144, which reads as a soft rosy tan. On Tomoe River my swatches come out noticeably deeper and browner than that suggests. The dip-pen bar and handwriting are a mid terracotta-brown rather than a pastel, and the swabs go deeper again. Treat it as a soft, muted brown rather than a pale one.

Shading: Moderate. The writing sample shows gentle light-to-mid variation rather than sharp contrast. Where ink pools heavily the tone shifts a long way — the swab drops dry with dark chestnut concentration edges and, in one, a cooler grey-brown band separating out at the rim. That's a muddler swab exaggerating the effect, so expect something gentler from a nib.

Sheen: None.

Shimmer: None. 

Flow: Medium.

The interesting bit: Monte Bianco is the Italian name for Mont Blanc — and for the dessert named after it, sweetened chestnut purée piped in fine vermicelli strands over cream to mimic the peak. The bottle label shows the dessert, not the mountain, which explains why an ink called "white mountain" is chestnut brown. It sits in the Baby Color Line, Tono & Lims' 30-colour soft-shade range, where the names split between desserts (Financier, Yakiimo, Green Smoothie) and wordplay on "U". The brand itself is a Japan–Korea collaboration between Takashi Ono, a fountain pen enthusiast, and Lim's Lab in South Korea, begun after the two met at a stationery show in 2018.
