Hue: A warm golden ochre to tan in writing, with an olive-green edge where the ink pools. I couldn’t find an official colour description to compare against, so this is based on my swatches. Where it pools heavily, it separates into a dusky rose-brown with dark olive-green banding, which is very different from how it writes.

Shading: Yes. Moderate shading from pale gold to a deeper tan-brown.

Sheen: None seen in my swatches.

Shimmer: None.

Flow: Medium.

The interesting bit: Golden Horn King (金角大王) is one of two demon brothers in Journey to the West. With his younger brother, Silver Horn King, he plots to eat the monk Tang Sanzang and is undone by Sun Wukong’s tricks. In the novel, the pair turn out to be the furnace boys of Laozi, which may explain the artwork. The label shows a long-haired cat in a chef’s hat marked 金 (“gold”), wearing a sash reading 厨神 (“God of Cookery”) and holding the brothers’ magic gourds. It’s surrounded by hotpot ingredients. Fanyantan released it as a New Year pair with Silver Horn King.

This is a hand-decanted 4ml sample vial from my own bottle.
Photos are my own swatches on Tomoe River Paper.
I’m a collector and I’m always happy to talk ink, so please message me if you have any questions.
