Van Dieman’s The Wilderness Series Hastings Caves - 4ml Fountain Pen Ink Sample
Details
Hue: Golden mustard yellow, deepening to amber-brown where the ink pools. Officially described as a butter yellow; on my swatches it reads warmer and more ochre-gold than buttery.
Shading: Clear shading in writing, from golden yellow to amber-brown.
Sheen: Dark brown edging where the ink pools. The greenish edge sheen in the official description does not show on my swatches.
Shimmer: Silver, and generous. It has a champagne-pink cast over the yellow in heavier swabs and is subtler in fine lines.
Flow: Medium
The interesting bit: The ink is named after Hastings Caves, a dolomite cave system at the southern tip of Tasmania. Lit up, the caves glow golden brown and the stalactites glisten. A thermal spring there keeps the nearby water warm all year. The brand name nods to Van Diemen’s Land, Tasmania’s old colonial name, and the inks are mixed in Launceston, Tasmania.
This is a hand-decanted 4ml sample vial from my own bottle.
Photos are my own swatches on Tomoe River Paper.
