TAG Stationery Kyo no Oto No.16 Urahairo – 4ml Fountain Pen Ink Sample Vial
Details
Hue: TAG describe it as a pale, subdued green, like the underside of a leaf. My swatches run deeper than "pale": a muted mid leaf-green in writing, pooling to a deep teal-green in the swabs.
Shading: Clear shading in the writing, from soft mint-green to mid green. Heavier swabs show dramatic light-to-dark gradation, with some separation into teal and olive tones.
Sheen: Faint. A dark, near-black rim forms where the ink pools heavily, with a slight lustre on the swabs when tilted. None in the writing.
Shimmer: None.
Flow: Medium.
The interesting bit: Urahairo breaks down as ura (underside), ha (leaf) and iro (colour). It is the quieter, duller green of the back of a leaf, a traditional Japanese colour dating back to the Heian period. The Kyo no Oto inks were developed with a Kyoto plant-dyeing research institute made up of textile dyeing specialists. Urahairo first appeared as a limited release in 2018, numbered 08. After years of requests, TAG brought it back as a permanent colour in 2024 and renumbered it 16. No.08 now belongs to Moegiiro.
