Details

Hue: Kingdom Note describes this as a light olive green (it’s often sold as “Fiddler Crab Green”). In my swatches it writes as a golden ochre-brown. There’s only a hint of olive in the heavier swab areas, so expect gold-brown rather than green on the page.

Shading: Strong. Written lines move from bright gold to a deeper brown where the ink collects.

Sheen: Slight. A subtle dark sheen shows where the ink pools heavily, but you won’t see it in normal writing.

Shimmer: None.

Flow: Wet.

The interesting bit: Sailor made this ink for Kingdom Note, the Tokyo stationery shop, as part of its crustacean series. Uca arcuata is a fiddler crab found on Japanese tidal mudflats. Its Japanese name, shiomaneki, means “tide-beckoner”, because the male waves his one oversized claw as if calling the sea back in. The ink also has a hidden side: in heavy swabs it separates into gold with a blue-grey halo.

This is a hand-decanted 4ml sample vial from my own bottle.
Photos are my own swatches on Tomoe River Paper.
I’m a collector and I’m always happy to talk ink, so please message me if you have any questions.
