Hue: Officially described as an ashy brown, and in writing that’s accurate – a soft, muted taupe-brown. My swatches show something the official description doesn’t mention: a plum-violet undertone that separates out wherever the ink pools, giving deep aubergine-brown edges around a beige centre.

Shading: Medium. Visible in handwriting, with darker ends to strokes and loops. Heavier applications show strong chromatic separation into plum and tan.

Sheen: None observed.

Shimmer: None.

Flow: Medium.

The interesting bit: The Chinese name on the label is 核桃 (hétao), walnut. The label is a vintage-style botanical plate showing the whole tree: leaves, catkins, the green husked fruit and the cracked nut. The name suits a brown ink, because walnut husks were historically boiled down to make brown drawing and writing ink. PenBBS started as a Chinese online fountain pen community and has been making ink since 2005, releasing it in numbered seasons.

This is a hand-decanted 4ml sample vial from my own bottle.
Photos are my own swatches on Tomoe River Paper.
I’m a collector and I’m always happy to talk ink, so please message me if you have any questions.
